Notebook: Transgender persons are no longer allowed to exist. It’s that easy. They are America’s Palestinians, and if America were Israel, it wouldn’t be a stretch. Israel is the 51st and most popular state, with a flag that is redder than the combined flags of Wyoming, Alabama, and West Virginia. There are so many similarities. Palestinian identity, history, and geography are not acknowledged. In Israel and the areas under military occupation, it is forbidden to fly the Palestinian flag. According to Christy Chong, it is forbidden in Fagler schools to display the Pride flag, create safe spaces, or acknowledge a student’s gender preferences or gender pronouns. I would like to know the number of deaths. Israel’s destruction of Gaza in recent years has undoubtedly made that point clear, but when taken as a whole, LGBTQ suicides must have some connection to the murder of Palestinians nonetheless. A revanchist erasing of entire populations, primarily to the quiet of a society that permits it, is what human rights are today. However, what can we expect from the Arab East, for example, where, with very few exceptions, LGBTQ people and Palestinians are more ostracized, restricted, and reviled than anyplace else in the world? Those underground support groups must be tragically fascinating.

The government’s use of state authority against minority groups—Black people, Indigenous people, and homosexual people, to mention a few—has occurred in some of the most heinous instances in American history. History has continuously deemed these initiatives to be unethical, unlawful, and un-American, despite the fact that they may have had widespread support at the time. President Trump is drawing on the darkest aspects of this history rather than comprehending it. His directive to the government to discriminate against transgender persons and treat gender as unchangeable was one of his first actions during his second administration. In his Inaugural Address, Obama said that the United States government will officially adopt the stance that there are only two genders going forward: male and female. [] At least $215 million was spent by anti-transgender politicians to blame transgender persons for a number of socioeconomic problems. The Republican Party has increasingly viewed attacking trans rights as a political winner, much as it did attacking civil rights during Richard Nixon s presidency and attacking gay rights in George W. Bush s. That posture was disgracefully reflected in the speed and glee with which House Republicans barred transgender women from using women s restrooms on Capitol Hill after the election of Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress. Mr. Trump is currently harming trans people because he gained power by denigrating and mocking trans people. [] Beyond the military, Mr. Trump will pursue transgender Americans. And his instinct for demonization, his habit of dividing the public into those worthy of protection and those who should be cast aside, his habitual cruelty to those who can be pushed around without others speaking up will go far beyond a campaign against this one small, vulnerable group. It would be wise for Americans to keep in mind the difficult lessons learned throughout our history as these campaigns continue.
