Notably:In the summer of 2019, Theodore Ell and his wife Caitlin Bell, who was Australia’s deputy ambassador to Lebanon at the time, abducted a kitten from a guest house on the outskirts of Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley. On the basis of no evidence, they assumed that this dust-covered, malnourished, and extremely thirsty creature, as Ell stated, belonged to no one here and must have lost her mother. They also assumed that she caused some annoyance to the owners because the owner’s daughter once flinched and avoided her (as I do roughly a dozen times a day when any of my four cats insist on wrong-footing me on the stairs), and that, of course, the cat must soon die if left there. Thus, they were able to smuggle her out. Why the intricate plan to steal her if she was nobody’s property? Why don’t you ask the cat’s owners whether they want to get rid of it?Because art thieves and grave robbers, from Napoleon to the crusades to the French and British mandates over these lands, shrugged and trampled similarly when they raided local property, splurging on societies like Lebanon that unique gift of Anglo-European societies: supreme condescension, while disguising larceny in virtue. To inquire about the owners’ opinions would have been impolite of Ell and Bell. They didn’t want to jeopardize their treasure. Without considering who could be missing her, they carried the cat back to Beirut and named her Jazzy.Ell sLebanon Days (Atlantic Books), a novel released in Australia last year, describes the scene. From late 2018 to early 2021, Ell, a poet, researcher, and educator, resided in Lebanon. Five months before to Ell’s arrival, his wife, Caitlin Bell, was assigned to Beirut as the deputy to Australian Ambassador Rebecca Grindlay. We don’t need kidnappers of cats.
