Palm Coast Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office Hold Joint Training at Long Creek Nature Preserve

The Palm Coast Fire Department and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office collaborated on a three-day training exercise earlier this week. This is the most recent in a series of training exercises the two departments have conducted to get ready for a range of potential crises.

During the drill, which took place at the Long Creek Nature Preserve, the two agencies responded to mock emergency calls where a jet ski accident victim required critical medical care. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office provided one of five boats for each scenario, and in coordination with the Fire Department, they engaged, stabilized, and transported the patient safely back to shore aboard the vessel so that emergency medical procedures could be carried out.

According to Lt. Dan Driscoll of the Palm Coast Fire Department, “this training really incorporates a number of those variables, from unpredictability to performing under pressure in an unfamiliar environment.” Emergencies can involve many complicated variables. To ensure that we are all as ready as possible for any emergency, we would want to express our gratitude to our partners at the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office for conducting this training with us and collaborating with us.

Collaborating with the fire department on joint training exercises like this is crucial because it exposes our staff to real-life situations involving weather and teamwork, said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. Every second matters in an emergency, and a smooth response from all of our agencies could be the difference between life and death.

The drill involved around 60 Palm Coast Fire Department members over three days. Visit https://www.palmcoast.gov/fire or follow @PalmCoastFire on social media to find out more about the Palm Coast Fire Department.
