Former Public Defender AssistantOn August 26, at Flagler Cares Flagler County Village at Palm Coast’s City Marketplace, Regina Nunnally, a motivational speaker, author, preacher, and attorney with Community Legal Services, will provide a free Know Your Rights program for tenants.
The course will provide renters with important information about their legal rights and obligations. Nunnally will discuss frequent problems faced by tenants. She is well-known in the courtroom for her tenacious advocacy in the face of overwhelming odds and her vivid ability to explain complex matters. These include a variety of topics, such as disagreements over rental repairs, the eviction procedure and how to avoid it, how to spot and stay away from rental scams, and the rights of renters whether or not they have a lease.
In addition to learning about tools to remedy or prevent difficulties, participants will get the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns they may be experiencing at their rental.
The class will be held at the Flagler County Village Community Room, City Marketplace, 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite B304, third floor, at 5:30 p.m.
A person becomes a tenant subject to Florida law when they pay rent to live in a house, apartment, condominium, or mobile home. According to the Florida Bar’s pamphlet on renters’ rights, it makes no difference if payments are paid on a weekly, monthly, or other regular basis. Furthermore, it makes no difference if the house, apartment, condo, or mobile home is rented from a private individual, a business, or the majority of public entities. Even in the absence of a formal lease agreement, these facts remain valid. The Florida Residential Landlord Tenant Act delineates the rights of tenants.
I am very aware of the difficulties impoverished people and young people encounter, particularly in the legal system. Nunnally has written, “As an attorney, I have encountered a range of intricate, unpopular, and volatile issues.”
Nunnally, who attended Barry University School of Law and the University of Florida, served as an associate public defender in the Seventh Judicial Circuit’s criminal division from 2005 to 2014. Putnam, St. Johns, Volusia, and Flagler counties are all included in the circuit. Nunnally represented numerous defendants at over 60 jury and non-jury cases, primarily in Flagler County. In addition to being a featured lecturer and motivational speaker at conferences in Central Florida, on radio, and at university panel discussions, she has authored a number of legal papers.
She is renowned for her Nunneryizm (e.g., “Thy shalt not be ignorant” and “What’s your malfunction?”) and is also a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. According to a legal colleague’s webpage, Nunneryizm is a version of my last name. I would make up my [witty] legal jargon as I presented my case to the jury or judge in court. My coworker came up with the term “Nunneryizms” as my tagline.
Community Legal Services and Flagler Cares collaborated to create the program, which was made possible by a CLS grant. In order to empower eligible people of Flagler County and Central Florida to defend their rights, Community Legal Services, a nonprofit law practice, offers free legal aid and education on civil legal issues.Flagler Cares is a non-profit organization that uses a no-wrong-door strategy to link people to resources, benefits, and direct assistance.
In order to provide much-needed information to our neighbors who are either currently dealing with a landlord issue or simply wish to learn more about their rights as tenants, Flagler Cares CEO Carrie Baird said, “We are thrilled to organize this event with Community Legal Services, and hopefully others in the future.”
You can book a space here, or you can walk in. Everyone is welcome and the workshop is free.
