From intelligence and wit to sensitivity, melancholy, abrasiveness, and brutality, Kissinger represented human complexity at the age of 45. He would also develop a talent for deceit as he adapted to the complex and shady intrigues of Nixon’s court. He had thrived in an academic jungle that was at least as hostile as the highest levels of government, not the naive researcher who had been pitted against formidable rivals for power, as he loved to imply. He was motivated by an unquenchable, almost primordial need. He told journalist Oriana Fallaci, “What interests me is what you can do with power.”
