Notably: More foolish. As the United States climbs onto the debt ash heap alongside the British Empire, pick your poison. According to Statista: The most recent version of the measure that the president calls “big and beautiful” would increase the already skyrocketing government debt by $3.3 trillion, according to projections from the Congressional Budget Office. The Senate package has even more drastic tax cuts than the one that was approved by the House on May 22, which would result in more than $800 billion in new debt by 2034. The most recent iteration of the historic law adds fresh tax cuts and extends current ones, totaling around $4.5 trillion over the next ten years. Deep cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Obamacare as well as rollbacks of clean energy programs would somewhat offset the lost tax revenue, but the budget gap is still too large for House Republicans, who had been determined that it be kept to $2.5 trillion over a ten-year period. The plan’s prospects in the narrowly divided House, where Republicans cannot afford many defectors for the bill to pass before the July 4 deadline set by President Trump, are seriously called into question by exceeding that benchmark by such a large margin.

However, missed opportunities are more than just regrettable occurrences for those like myself who grew up in disaster-affected nations where the desire for advancement, development, democracy, and dignity was continuously thwarted. History does not always provide opportunities for us to catch up, and if we do not respond appropriately at the correct moment, entire civilizations may regress, nations may be destroyed, and countless populations may get mired in hopelessness, bitterness, hatred of others, and self-loathing. I’m merely expressing a reality that I’ve been saddenedly thinking about ever since I opened my eyes to the outside world. Specifically, the harm inflicted by the treaties negotiated in the aftermath of the First World War was severe, long-lasting, and frequently irreparable in many parts of the world, from Central Europe to Eastern Asia, including my home region of the Levant.
