Dickens creates the most potent opening of all his books by spreading his fog and, for good measure, including a dinosaur. He uses the gloomy, filthy English sky and earth to establish the book’s tone. In addition to highlighting the physical ills of London, such as its poisonous water, decaying housing, bursting cemeteries, and festering sewerage, it will use the worst elements of the legal system—its inhumanity, sloth, corruption, and obstruction—as a springboard for a more significant issue: the poor governance of society as a whole. Most of the jokes in Bleak House are tinged with terror, so there won’t be nearly as much of the lighthearted humor found in the early novels. Dickens writes as a poet, enjoying describing evil and gloomy locations just as much as he does describing virtue and beauty. His daring imagination now produces settings as bizarre and imaginative as Shakespeare’s.
