Ryan Nelson, 33, Accused of Marital Rape on Mother’s Day, Among Other Domestic Violence Charges

A 33-year-old man from Bunnell who lives on County Road 2006, Ryan William Nelson, has been in the Flagler County jail since Wednesday on four felony counts, including a second-degree felony count of marital rape, which is an assault that allegedly occurred on Mother’s Day last year.

Nelson is being jailed without bond on several accusations, including sexual violence. Melissa Clark, the prosecuting assistant state attorney, submitted a motion this morning to deny him bond until the case is resolved.

In a phone conversation that was captured by investigators with her consent the day following the assault, the 27-year-old alleged victim expressed to Nelson her sadness over the events of the night before: “You hit me, you raped me, and you find it amusing.” For example, you act that way toward me even if you claim to love me. Nelson accused her throughout the call of stealing their shared child from him earlier. (In 2018, when he went three months without seeing his son, the lady reported him to police for domestic abuse.)

And you have the right to push yourself on me because of this? She questioned him.

Indeed, he informed her.

She questioned him, “And violate me without my permission?”

Indeed, he informed her that she would have to pay for her actions because, well, fuck you. The consequences of your actions were always going to bite you in the rear.

How will I make the payment?

He informed her, “You’re putting up with it by being treated this way.”

So you continue to rape me and beat the living daylights out of me?

We’ll see. I might be almost finished, perhaps given this equal, but once again, he assured her, you would never get away with those things. Even though he claimed to love her, he still intended to harm you. She told him she didn’t want him to hurt her, especially on Mother’s Day, and he chuckled.

Because Flagler County Sheriff’s investigators were looking into another disturbance at Ryan’s house last Tuesday, the alleged rape was not reported until then. When the couple argued the previous evening, the woman had contacted the police to say that she saw stars as he repeatedly hit her head, wrapped his hands around her neck, and flung her against the front door. She claimed that when she acted rudely or out of line, he threatened to forcibly remind her who was in control.

The entire incident was observed by the couple’s autistic kid. Authorities were informed by the child’s mother that Nelson had been mistreating their German shepherd dog and acting increasingly aggressively toward their youngster. She claimed to have a nine-minute audio recording of him verbally threatening and stating to her that he would kill her if she ever left him, kill the police if she ever called them, and kill the judge if she ever brought him to court.

She also claimed that he had abused her on Mother’s Day during that investigation, after she had consistently refused to give her approval to have an intimate relationship with him. The woman contacted Nelson while the deputies were present as the investigation went on. A recording of their talk was made. Nelson used derogatory words to disparage the woman’s beauty and other qualities in the statements mentioned above and numerous more.

In addition, Nelson faces charges of domestic violence by strangulation, false imprisonment, and tampering with a witness or victim in a first-degree criminal case, which is a first-degree crime in and of itself. Nelson’s weapons could be seized by the sheriff thanks to a risk protection order that the sheriff’s office has requested. A judge would issue the order.

The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence estimates that between 10 and 14 percent of married women in the US are raped by their spouses. The idea that marital rape is less dangerous than other types of sexual abuse is untrue, as about one-third of women report having unwelcome sex with their partner. Marital rape can have numerous mental and physical repercussions.
