Early this morning, just south of the interchange with Palm Coast Parkway, a 20-year-old man walking on I-95 in Palm Coast was struck and killed by two cars as he entered northbound traffic. The man may have suffered a medical episode.
At 3:02 a.m., the event was reported to the 911 dispatch center in Flagler County. The man was standing on the outside shoulder, facing west, when the pedestrian, for some reason, entered the northbound lanes, directly in front of oncoming traffic, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
A 74-year-old male from Collegeville, Pennsylvania, was driving a Ford Edge, and a 51-year-old lady from Roanoke, Virginia, was driving a Nissan Rogue. The pedestrian, a New York City resident, was struck by both SUVs. The second car carried two women, ages 74 and 72. There were no injuries to any of the people inside the two cars. Both drivers stopped.
The New Yorker had been in a Nissan with a pal. Earlier, they had stopped. According to family members’ accounts given to 911, his cousin told a dispatcher that he had experienced a neurotic episode and had been acting strangely and experiencing problems. Earlier, he had been in Orlando to see his brother.
At 3:18 a.m., a Flagler County Fire Rescue paramedic declared the 20-year-old dead at the site after he sustained severe, numerous injuries.
The collision was the first pedestrian fatality on Flagler County roads this year and the eleventh overall. The Florida Highway Patrol reports that as of August 2, there had been 836 collisions, 515 of which resulted in injuries.
